Mother and Child Health Programs by Nita Ambani

Nita Ambani has started health programs like ASMAN and Saksham with Reliance Foundation (RF). These programs are based on the health of the mother and child.

ASMAN program

The project ASMAN is a first of its kind project in India. It is focused on using an innovative approach to leveraging multiple technology-based innovations for healthcare and strengthening the capacity of healthcare providers. This will ensure safe health outcomes for mother and the newborns. The project first aims to target the states of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Eight districts from these states are selected for the pilot intervention.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Tata Trusts, MSD India, and the United States Agency for International Development has partnered with RF and Nita Ambani for this project. The main aim of this project is to accelerate the reduction in neonatal and maternal deaths by improving the quality of care provided to newborns and their mothers. This care should be provided from the time the mother and child are admitted until the time they are discharged as this is the time where the risk of mortality is high.

Saksham

The health of a newborn child depends on the health of the mother. The health of the mother depends upon her health status during her adolescence. For this reason, RF has come up with the project Saksham as an RF health initiative. The initiative focuses on generating awareness in the community. It also wants to facilitate the strengthening of healthcare delivery platforms and the health systems. It is a project which specifically focuses on the health of mother and child.

The project’s focus is to increase health literacy in communities. It wants to deliver quality care at both stages—antenatal and postnatal for the mother and child as well as care for adolescents. The project does this with the help of trained community health workers also known as Swaasth Sanginis. They are also creating referral linkages to higher services and forming health committees in villages to promote these health initiatives. The project also aims at developing and implementing village health plans and strengthening the current government health provisions for providing quality service.

Key Highlights of the Saksham Program

  • The implementation of this project has been done across seven states of India in 140 villages.
  • Villages have adopted a certain financial model. This financial model promotes ownership and sustainability of the health worker system.
  • These villages have more than 90 health sub-committees that supervise the community health worker system as well as lead health initiatives in these villages.
  • This project has deployed almost 350 skilled community health workers. They are trained in providing home-based care as well as point of care diagnostics. These community health workers are also trained to collect information from the field which is critical for this program.
