Nita Ambani – A Social Service Pioneer

Nita Ambani heads the philanthropic arm of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). She is the Founder and Chairperson of Reliance Foundation, which works for the social transformation of India in areas of healthcare, education, rural transformation, urban renewal, sports, disaster response, and arts, culture and heritage.

Mrs. Ambani is a board member of RIL. She says that she is onboard for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Mrs. Ambani has compassion for people and envisions an inclusive India. She loves to work for the people. Her middle-class upbringing has taught her the hardships of life and hence she is committed to alleviating the struggles of the marginalized sections of the society.

Work of Reliance Foundation

Led by Nita Ambani, Reliance Foundation adopts a holistic model to address the developmental challenges of India. It believes in catalyzing change through innovative and sustainable solutions to empower the people. The foundation organizes a number of community engagement initiatives to bring a positive societal impact.

Since its inception in 2010, Reliance Foundation has touched the lives of more than 12 million people across the country in over 10,500 villages and 50 urban areas. The initiatives of the organization have evolved over the years to cater to the ever-changing needs of the society. Mrs. Ambani involves herself in the initiatives of all the focus areas.

Nita Ambani’s contribution towards healthcare

Nita Ambani believes in the motto of ‘Health for All.’ In the healthcare sector, Reliance Foundation runs a number of programs. It offers free consultation and diagnostic services to the underprivileged through its Health Outreach program. The foundation has sponsored over 15,000 corneal transplants in 10 years under the Drishti program. The cause of the Drishti program is very close to Mrs. Ambani’s heart. She is a registered organ donor and encourages others for the same.

Nita Ambani strongly feels that a society is healthy only when its women are healthy. With this thought, she conducts many mother and child healthcare programs. Reliance Foundation has built healthcare centers at different places. It runs a multi-specialty care institute at Mumbai called Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre.

The hospital is equipped with advanced medical technologies. Mrs. Ambani believes that whoever comes to the hospital should receive utmost care. She has paid attention to details like how will the building look like, what uniform the staff will wear, and what will be the menu for the patients. She insisted on having windows in the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) so that the patients are able to see sunlight. Besides, she takes care of the patients by providing hot food and warm blankets to them.

Nita Ambani’s contribution towards education             

Reliance Foundation strives for ‘Education for All’ (EFA). The EFA initiative provides thousands of children with access to good quality education. The foundation has joined hands with a number of organizations and impacted the lives of more than 1 lakh underprivileged children. Every year, Nita Ambani takes around 15,000 children to the Wankhede Stadium for a Mumbai Indians match. She rejoices in giving a lifetime experience to the kids.

Nita Ambani’s contribution towards sports

Mrs. Ambani feels that sports is necessary for the overall development of the children. Through the varied sports programs run by her foundation, she gives an opportunity to the children to live their passions and hone their skills in different sports. Apart from cricket, Reliance Foundation works for games like football, basketball, tennis, golf, and kabaddi, among others. The grassroots initiatives of the foundation have reached over 3 million children in India.

Nita Ambani dreams of India as a multi-sport nation. She believes in the power of sports. She says that sports inculcate values in kids.  Due to her contribution towards the development of sports in India, Mrs. Ambani became the first Indian woman to be elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Nita Ambani’s contribution towards rural transformation

Reliance Foundation’s flagship program under rural transformation is called ‘Bharat India Jodo’ (BIJ). More than half of the foundation’s funds are used for this program. Through this initiative, Mrs. Ambani aims to bridge the rural and urban divide.

BIJ helps small farmers have a secured livelihood. It teaches them irrigation techniques to boost their agricultural productivity. Reliance Foundation also sets up communities in different villages to address the problems of the villagers and devise a solution for the same.

Mrs. Ambani targets the poorest villages under the BIJ program. She visits the villages and interacts with the locals. She believes that engagement is as important for development as resources and technology.

With the different initiatives of Reliance Foundation, Nita Ambani aims for a transformed India. She states this could only be possible through unity, commitment, dedication, and passion. Her determination for the cause has made her a social service pioneer in India.
