Nita Ambani is arguably regarded as a game-changer in the field of sports in India. From being a torchbearer of league-based cricket that has taken the country by storm to representing India at the Olympics as a designated official committee member, she has surely put India in the world map of sports. Adding another feather to her already illustrious career is this new achievement where the 4-year old Jr. NBA program which is sponsored by her non-profit organization, Reliance Foundation, has succeeded in training over 1.5 million youth in more than 2000 schools in India.
1.5 Million Youth Sign up for Reliance Foundation Jr. NBA Program
According to NBA India, the Jr. NBA program reached more than 1.5 million students in the academic year 2015-16. This was possible because of the increase in number of participating cities from eight to fourteen.
The Essence of the Program
The Jr. NBA Program, brought in Indian by Nita Ambani’s Reliance Foundation, is responsible for nurturing young talents and promoting the game of basketball. It aims to teach values of discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship and attempts to create future stars.
In conjunction with the national interest for basketball, the program also intends to sponsor young children who are interested in making playing basketball on an international level their career choice. The essence of the program is to help students participate in sports along with their academic courses.

Out of the fourteen cities, following ones attracted maximum participation: Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Kochi, Bangalore, Jaipur, Lucknow, Jalandhar, Chennai, Kottayam, Kolkata, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad.
All the activities related to the program took place in the months between September 2015 and April 2016.
Nita Ambani’s Role in Sports Development
NBA India credits Nita Ambani as the guiding spirit of the Foundation that has helped the program see light in the country. Without her unabashed support, it would have been difficult for the program to take effect in a country that is sentimental about only a single sport.
It is only because of Reliance Foundation and the support from all participating schools and visionaries that Jr. NBA has been able to pull of this new achievement. Garnering 1.5 million youth to sign up for a sports program is not an easy task, and thanks to Nita Ambani, we have crossed that hurdle. Here’s to many more achievements on the sports front.
