Nita Ambani led Reliance Foundation has had its focus on improving the various aspects of the Indian society through its various charitable initiatives since its inception back in 2010. With primary area of operations lying in rural transformation and development, education for children, sports and disaster response, the Foundation has put in place several programs aimed to improve the quality of lives of those in the rural sections of the country and also to maximize the economic benefits of their livelihoods. These programs range from Information Systems, where a farmer could get more data regarding the crop and the fertilizers he uses to Nutrition Gardens, which basically helps improve the basic intake for their diet with the addition of more nutritious food. In a similar fashion, RF has also launched programs for improving the healthcare of people.
Launch of Project Asman-
With the aim to reduce infant, neonatal and maternal mortality, Nita Ambani launched Project Asman, a healthcare program, in association with Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, MSD India (through its MSD for Mothers programme), Tata Trusts and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
It is a first of a kind project in India which primarily aims to provide a good quality of care to mothers and newborns. This is afforded to them right from the time of admission of mothers down to the time when they are discharged from the hospital, since this time period is when the mortality rate spikes.
The Approach Used by Asman-
Technological innovations being a key part of the project, the aim is to leverage multiple technology-based healthcare innovations to strengthen the capacity of healthcare providers to ensure safe health outcomes for mothers and newborns. Two states, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where the mortality rates are high, are set to commence this in eight districts. The ultimate goal si to reduce that rate in those states and prevent maternal and neo natal deaths in selected health facilities.
Nita Ambani’s Thoughts on Project Asman-
Nita Mukesh Ambani, Founder and Chairperson of Reliance Foundation had this to say about the project- “I believe that every life must be cared for and we should strive for a healthy India, where no mother is lost to child birth and every child can live life to his or her fullest potential. This is possible through smart, strong and sustainable partnerships. I am proud to be part of an alliance with which Reliance Foundation shares such strong synergies – institutions that share the same passion and commitment to tackle massive national challenges on a mission mode. For me, this partnership goes beyond just funding but leveraging our rich institutional experience, valued expertise and a strong shared commitment to improving mother and child survival in India. Asman gives me hope that change is possible.”
Project Asman is set to be a true inspiration for the coming projects with regards to healthcare and maternal care. Reliance Foundation truly has established a viable and sustainable approach in tackling the persistent problems faced by Indian mothers.
