Nita Ambani’s role in shaping Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital
Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre is a multi-specialty healthcare institute. The 341-bed hospital is equipped with advanced medical technology and high-quality healthcare services. While setting up the hospital, Nita Ambani said that Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation will not only be a hospital but also an institution of care. She has established the hospital with the principle of no discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, gender, age, and social status. Mrs. Ambani clarified that the motto of the hospital will not be restricted to treating lives but respecting lives. According to her, the Sir H. N. Reliance Foundation Hospital is a place where quality meets affordability.
Nita Ambani has been passionate about the hospital since the beginning. She herself cooked the first meal at the hospital for the patients. She shaped the hospital as a patient-centric institute. She approved the use of expensive and hi-tech Burlodge trolleys in the hospital. The trolleys are capable of serving hot as well as cold food at the same time to the patients. She also replaced the cold gel with gel warmers in the ultrasound room to make patients feel comfortable. Moreover, she arranged for soothing music and blankets in the MRI rooms.
While building the hospital, Nita Ambani ensured that all the Intensive Care Units (ICUs) have windows. She realized this need as her father could not see sunlight for five years when he was hospitalized. Mrs. Ambani gives a lot of attention to details. She is compassionate and makes sure that all the patients in the hospital receive the best treatment.
Reliance Foundation’s Health Outreach Program
Under the direction of Nita Ambani, Reliance Foundation operates a Health Outreach Program since 2012. It provides medical care services at places like Mumbai, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttarakhand through Static Medical Units (SMUs) and Mobile Medical Units (MMUs). SMUs offer free diagnostic and consultation services by qualified medical professionals to the poor. MMUs are equipped with high-tech machines and cloud-based software to serve the marginalized sections for free.
The Health Outreach program has served more than 4.9 lakh individuals. 80 percent families enrolled in the program have an annual income of less than INR 1 lakh. The program is focused on primary healthcare and care for chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension.
Nita Ambani’s focus on mother and child health
Nita Ambani believes that the health of the society depends on the health of its women. Hence, she lays a special emphasis on the mother and child health initiative. Reliance Foundation runs the Project Saksham under this initiative. The Project Saksham creates awareness among communities regarding the importance of the health of women and children. The project serves over 140 villages across seven states in India. It is focused on providing quality pregnancy and post-pregnancy care to mothers and children.
Reliance Foundation also provides healthcare services to adolescent girls. Under the Menstrual Hygiene Program, the foundation gives low-cost sanitary napkins and proper hygiene guidance to underprivileged women and young girls.
Reliance Foundation Drishti program
Reliance Foundation Drishti is an initiative to support the visually impaired and provide them with a better quality of life. The Drishti program has brought light into the lives of many. In the past ten years, Reliance Foundation Drishti has funded more than 15,000 corneal transplants. It is the biggest corneal grafting surgery program by a single corporation in India. The program also provides the visually impaired access to information with its Braille newspaper.
The cause of Drishti is very close to Mrs. Ambani’s heart. She promotes eye donation. She is also a registered organ donor. She believes that increase in the number of eye donors will help to eradicate blindness from India.
Apart from all these, Reliance Foundation also leads a number of other healthcare services. It has built a health center at Motikhavdi village in Jamnagar, Reliance AIDS Care Hospital at Hazira, and Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital at Lodhivali in Raigad.
Nita Ambani believes that the solution to India’s healthcare problems does not lie in bringing people to hospital but in bringing the hospital to people. With the numerous initiatives, Reliance Foundation along with its Chairperson strives to attain the goal of ‘Health for All.’
