Reliance Foundation Youth Sports (RFYS) is a program launched by Nita Ambani backed Reliance Foundation with the aim to inculate the values of sports in children and offer them opportunities and careers in sport. It has made it a mission to provide a platform for youngsters to showcase their talent in the sport they love, be it football or basketball, anything. This initiative has focused its efforts at the school and college level so as to have maximum impact. Currently, eight cities are a part of the foundation’s long-term goal which aims at establishing a sports association. RFYS aims to expand their outreach even more in future.
Nita Ambani and PM Shri. Narendra Modi launched RFYS-
The PM along with Nita Mukesh Ambani digitally launched the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports initiative back in 2016 all over India, kicking off nation’s largest multi-city, multi-sports school and college sports competition. The motto was to build a culture where sport is given as much importance as education itself. The need of the hour was to tap in the vast pool of talent in the system and provide those students with the required platform to evolve in their careers. RFYS had set up a six member advisory board consisting of educationalists and leading sports personalities to guide the thinking and expansion for this initiative. And so far, the progress made has been extensive.
As part of the continuous efforts by RFYS, 20 young footballers have been shortlisted for the scholarships offered by the organization based on their merit. This decision was made post the RFYS national level football championship, a yearly tournament held to allow students to showcase their abilities. Of the 20 children selected, 5 are from the city of Kolkata and Shillong, while Chandigarh had 4 students of their own. These scholarships have been spread over 4 categories; junior boys, senior boys, college boys and schoolgirls.
Support from AIFF-
The All India Football Federation has always supported the RFYS initiative. With the scholarships awarded, AIFF general secretary Kushal Das had this to say-
“The 20 players who have got the RFYS scholarships can be termed as some of the finest in the country in the youth category. They have come through an intense National-level competition that featured 4,400 schools & colleges and over 65,000 players across four age groups. They have been discovered by RFYS’ extensive grassroots development program, which the AIFF has encouraged all along. These 20 girls and boys will certainly be considered for further development in line with the AIFF youth development policy.”
Suffice to say the activities undertaken as part of the Reliance Foundation Youth Sports shall always be of benefit to those students who are looking to make it in sports. Nita M. Ambani has played a huge part in pushing this though and it has only had a positive impact in the condition of sports in this country.
