Nita Ambani plays a pivotal role as non-executive Director of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL). She is in fact the first woman so far to have come on board for the position in the private conglomerate. Additionally, she is also the Founder and Chairperson of RIL’s philanthropic arm Reliance Foundation (RF).
Nita Ambani on RIL’s Board of Directors
Nita’s appointment to the Board of Directors was confirmed by shareholders of Reliance Industries Limited. As the new director in the RIL team, Nita replaced Ramniklal H Ambani, Mukesh Ambani’s uncle. Mukesh Ambani spoke on the event of her appointment stating how her active involvement in the operation of Reliance Industries Limited has benefitted the company. He shed light on her association with the development of a state-of-the-art township, office campuses, healthcare services, the Jamnagar project, and customer touch points for Reliance’s retail arm. Furthermore, he emphasized on her vital role as Founder of institutions like the Dhirubhai Ambani International School as well as Reliance Foundation. He concluded saying that Nita’s presence in RIL would maximize the company’s development to a large extent.
Her Aim for RIL
Nita’s acceptance statement also stated her future goals for Reliance Industries. She stated that she takes the position with great responsibility and humility. Furthermore, Nita Ambani elaborated on how Reliance’s aim has constantly been to reach out to people in need and how she would continue to work towards this goal. So far, Nita Ambani has done tremendous work on behalf of RIL, particularly in the social sector, which is also one of the reasons for her appointment as a Non-Executive Director.
Nita Ambani’s Role in the Education Sector
Nita Ambani’s work at RIL spans across different fields, ranging from education to even healthcare. Currently she heads 13 schools in the country that serve to provide education to over 15,000 young students. Her interest in the area of education even led her to start the Dhirubhai Ambani International School that offers world-class education. Her foundation even associated with Mukesh Ambani-owned IPL team, Mumbai Indians in the ‘Education for All’ program to reach out to children from marginalized communities. This project has garnered success by transforming the lives of over 27,000 children.
Her Involvement in the Healthcare Industry
Nita Ambani’s foray into healthcare started when she took on the role of Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital’s President. Thereafter, her foundation went on to create a program for visually impaired individuals called ‘Drishti’. It is deemed as the largest corporate cornea transplant program, having accomplished around 13,000 transplants till date. Reliance Foundation Drishti also introduced a Braille paper that is published internationally, and is available across 19 countries in the world.
Her effort towards uplifting the marginalized communities was recognized when she received an Honorary Doctoral Degree in 2013 from SCSVMV University. Additionally, in the preceding year, she was also bestowed with the ‘Corporate Citizen of the Year’ award by the All India Management Association. Moreover, Nita Ambani was also considered to be the ‘Most Powerful Woman in Indian Business’ according to Business Today in the year 2011.
