Smt. Nita Ambani is a known personality in India, both, for being the wife of noted industrialist Mukesh Ambani, as well as being responsible for a variety of initiatives that focuses on the betterment of the society and improves the livelihood of those in rural areas and the children for whom education and opportunities in sports are not sufficient. She is also a non-executive board member of the conglomerate Reliance Industries and serves as the Chairperson of Reliance Foundation, which she founded back in 2010. The organization takes up activities that help deal with problems regarding rural transformation, sports and education in general as well as disaster response. All in all, she has a long list of achievements and an even longer list of admirers.
Nita Ambani’s selection as an IOC member-
Back in August 2016, she became the first Indian woman to have been included in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the 129th Session of IOC held in Rio de Janeiro, a day before the start of the 31st Olympic Games. It is a momentous occasion and is a proud moment for her as well as the country.
Since this appointment, Nita Ambani has been involved in several activities as part of her responsibilities for the IOC. Most notably, at the Rio 2016 Olympics, she became the first Indian woman to honor the winners with medals at an Olympic victory ceremony. She also distributed medals during the recently concluded Winter Olympics in Australia.
Bid to host Youth Games in Mumbai-
After the Indian Olympic Association ended, President Narinder Batra declared that India would bid for hosting the Olympic Youth Games in the year 2026. Nita Mukesh Ambani, as an individual member of the IOC, has decided to put forth this idea in front of the entire committee.
The plan, moving forward, is to construct a modern, state of the art infrastructure wherein an Olympic village for the involved athletes could stay over the course of the tournament. The location of this village is set to be on the outskirts of Mumbai, along the route to Pune. With the new airport in Navi Mumbai expected to be ready by that time, the city will be more than equipped to host the mega event.
Meeting with the IOC President Bach-
The president of IOC, Thomas Bach, visited Mumbai recently and it was Nita Ambani who had gone to the airport to welcome and receive him. The idea was to make the pitch during this particular visit by Bach. The Ambanis had also hosted a grand party at Antilia to welcome the man, with a host of Bollywood stars present, including Aamir Khan and Salman Khan.
It is evident that this nation is making great strides in the field of sports and is now a serious option for hosting major sporting events, keeping in mind the fact that even the U17 FIFA World Cup was hosted here. Nita Ambani is making the right moves in ensuring that India is at the forefront in sports.
