Nepal earthquake in April 2015

When a severe earthquake hit Nepal on 25th April 2015, the Nita Ambani-led organization came to its rescue. Near the capital city of Kathmandu, the powerful earthquake shook Nepal with a magnitude of 7.8. The massive and disastrous earthquake turned the beautiful tourist country into a living hell.

As per the official reports, the earthquake killed more than 8617 people and injured other 16808 people. It crashed down a 200-feet watchtower and caused avalanches at the Mount Everest, killing 17 climbers. 4.7 lakh houses were destroyed. Thousands of individuals were trapped in the debris of the collapsed houses. Some were struggling to save their lives, some were grieving over the loss, while some others were helpless as their means of livelihood were shattered.

Mission Rahat by Nita Ambani’s team

Understanding the plight of the people, Nita Ambani organized Mission Rahat in Nepal for rescue, relief, rehabilitation, and reconstruction. She urgently deployed a two-member team to assess the ground situation. Reliance Foundation was one of the first teams to respond to the disaster. It reached Nepal on 28th April 2015. Yatindra Shashi and Ravi Bansal, the team leader visited Kathmandu and finalized three districts that were worst affected. They chose districts of Nuwakot, Dhading, and Sindhupalchok.

Sindhupalchok caught the most attention of the media and was flooded by relief agencies. The Nita Ambani team thus focussed on the other two districts. The team contacted District Disaster Response Committees (DDRCs) in both the places. The DDRCs understood the dedication and ability of Reliance Foundation and assigned it villages, where no relief had reached. The organization picked the remotest villages to offer relief.

Due to lack of transportation and accessibility, the difficulties of the mission were high. Other difficulties were foreign soil, tough bureaucracy, harsh terrain, and unknown language. However, nothing could stop Reliance Foundation. The team supported the local communities with food, temporary shelter in the form of tents, and household kits. It joined hands with Red Cross Nepal to enhance the process of relief material distribution.
